Public Board Meeting: Board will look to approve motions for reconfiguration

Background Information

As you may already know, this year SD64 has embarked on a full review of its program offerings, transportation services, and facilities.

At its Regular Public Meeting on October 10, 2018, the Board of Education passed the following motion:

…that the district initiates a community-based consultation process to review configurations that support the best educational outcomes for students in addition to maximizing cost-effective education delivery.

Phase I

The Board began the process by asking stakeholders and community members: “What are the ways we could organize learning and District resources to best serve our students?” Feedback was received through public consultation meetings, forms and email.

The Board has concluded the initial consultation phase of the configuration review process and thanks to everyone for their thoughts, ideas, and feedback.

So where are we now?

See Video: A brief overview of Phase II of the District Configuration Review Process

Phase II

At its December Public Meeting, the Board decided to create a feedback review committee to organize and sort the thoughts and ideas received from stakeholders and the public regarding district configuration. It was also agreed at the December meeting that the Board will consider recommendations put forward by the Education Committee at the September 2020 public Board meeting. Any resulting changes to district configuration will be governed by the School Act and by District Policies.

Configuration Feedback Committee

Members of the Configuration Feedback Review Committee will represent students, CUPE, GITA, DPAC, GIPVPA, senior administration, and the Board.

The Committee will review the feedback gathered from Phase I including the public consultation meetings, and website feedback form, and will report to the Education Committee in April 2020.

The Board will consider recommendations from the Education Committee at its September 2020 regular scheduled meeting*.

*Due to COVID-19 response measures and the temporary suspension of Board Committee meetings, the Feedback Review Committee submitted its report directly to the Board at the May Public Board Meeting.

Scope of Opportunity

On May 13, 2020, the Board passed the following motion:

“that the Board directs staff to provide recommendations, at the June Board meeting, of possible financial modelling scenarios for investigation over the summer.”

In response, staff presented a Scope of Opportunity  for the Board’s consideration. At the June 10, 2020 public meeting, the Board directed staff, through two separate motions, to:

“undertake a financial and operational feasibility study of the Scope of Opportunity presented by staff”

And to:

“identify policy and procedural implications associated with the Scope of Opportunity presented by staff.”
