District Configuration Review Phase 1

This year, SD64 has embarked on a full review of its program offerings, transportation services, and facilities. The Board of Education is seeking your input to help determine an optimal and sustainable configuration model that will best serve the students in the Gulf Islands School District.

What does district configuration mean?

• The Why

  At its Regular Public Meeting on October 10, 2018, the Board of Education passed the following motion:

  …that the district initiates a community-based consultation process to review configurations that support the best educational outcomes for students in addition to maximizing cost-effective education delivery.

• The Goal

  To improve student success. It has been nearly 25 years since the school district undertook reconfiguration. A review process, that engages families and staff in all of our school communities, will help the district to identify areas to best sustain a high-quality education system that prioritizes access, relevance, equity and accountability for its stakeholders.

• The Question

  The Board of Education is asking staff, students, families, and communities this question: 

  What are the ways we could organize learning and District resources to best serve our students?

• The How

  In the coming months, there will be many opportunities to share your insights and preferences and to be a part of the dialogue for possible change. We look forward to hearing from you.

  Be Part of the Conversation. SD64 encourages families and community to actively participate in dialogue regarding student learning. Your Board of Education looks forward to this opportunity to discuss policy, practice, and the best interest of learning.

  Have a Voice. SD64 wants to hear what you think about possible changes to district configuration.

  Your Input is Valued. SD64 will not proceed with changes to the existing configuration model without strong support for change and evidence of viability/sustainability.

Though the formal part of the configuration review will close in January 2020, we will continue to consider the ideas and opinions expressed by parents, students, teachers, staff and other stakeholders as we move forward.	In the upcoming school year,  School District 64 will be hosting school and community meetings,  and online engagement forums to facilitate conversation and gather input around possible district reconfiguration. Thought Exchange School District 64 invites you to share your thoughts and ideas about the ways this district can organize learning and resources to best serve students. Through Thoughtexchange, you will have the opportunity to read the thoughts of other participants and assign 1-5 stars to show how important each idea is to you. You will also have a chance to discover the top thoughts in the conversation. This process is interactive and ongoing and closes on November 30, 2019.
