Local Scholarships, Bursaries, and Awards are available to School District 64 graduating students through donations from individuals, companies and local service clubs in our local island communities.

We would like to acknowledge the generosity of our community donors in the Gulf Islands School District. Unlike National Scholarships, many of these awards are based on criteria other than academic marks, making them accessible to more students in the graduation class.

National Awards are designed to recognize graduating students from all across Canada who demonstrate excellence in academics, leadership and/or athletics.

Entrance Scholarships, Bursaries and Awards are offered by all Post-Secondary Institutions.  Some institutions automatically consider applicants for these awards and for others you must seek them out and apply individually.

Tips for Applying 

  • Ensure that you keep your scholarship application plans organized
  • Consider creating a binder for yourself.
  • Ensure that you are continually aware of upcoming deadlines
  • Make copies of all documents that you receive and send out.  (resumes, letters of intent, reference letters)
  • Create a correspondence file for each scholarship that interests you.
  • Keep an up-to-date “activity sheet” of all of your present and past extra-curricular activities, community service, clubs, sports, awards, honours, etc.
  • Talk to Tony or Nia in the Counselling Department if you need further support or contact resources.

TRANSCRIPTS

When applying for either a scholarship or to a post-secondary institution, a transcript of grades is required to process your application.

LETTERS OF INTENT

Use all the essay skills you have acquired at school.  The committee will be looking for content but they will be influenced by style. If there are no specific requirements for an essay or letter, you should consider the following:

  • Who are you
  • Academic standing
  • Participation in school
  • Participation in community activities
  • Future plans
  • Information concerning awards and scholarships won by you in any field
  • Details of employment in the last two years
  • Details of any volunteer work you have done

RESUME

Brainstorm relevant data for the following categories...

  • Work Experience
  • Athletic Achievements
  • Visual & Performing Arts Achievements
  • School Involvement
  • Community Involvement
  • Conferences/Workshops/Certificates
  • Skills & Interests       

Format the resume.  

Have someone proofread the resume.

REFERENCE LETTERS

Reference letters are vital when applying for a job, a post-secondary program and a scholarship. Before approaching someone to write a reference for you, prepare your resume to provide the writer with some additional information about yourself.

Remember to plan ahead and give the writer a lot of time. One to two weeks notice is a sign of courtesy. Follow up with a simple reminder of your reference request a couple of days before you pick it up. Keep a copy of your reference letter.
