Physical and Health Education

All students must successfully complete a Physical Education 10 course for graduation in British Columbia.

Physical and Health Education 9 

This course emphasizes students’ daily participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities that promote lifelong healthy active living. Through a variety of activities, students will develop the knowledge, movement skills, positive attitudes and behaviors needed to improve personal fitness levels and lead healthy active lifestyles. Students will investigate issues related to healthy living such as; the basic components of fitness, introduction to weight training, nutrition, body image, conflict resolution and mental health. All Grade 9 students will complete pass/fail health units. During the course, students will participate in activities designed to develop goal-setting skills, leadership skills, communication skills, social skills and movement skills. We will try a wide range of activities in the hopes that can you find something you like that you can do to stay fit for life. There will be something for everyone. Let’s have fun!

Students will investigate issues related to healthy living such as; the basic components of fitness, introduction to weight training, nutrition, body image, conflict resolution and mental health. Grade 10 students will also complete pass/fail health units in substance use/misuse and sexual health. Students will participate in activities designed to develop goal-setting skills, leadership skills, communication skills, social skills and movement skills. We will try a wide range of activities in the hopes that can you find something you like that you can do to stay fit for life. There will be something for everyone. Let’s have fun!

Active Living 11,12 

This course will emphasize the daily participation in a variety of enjoyable physical activities. Through a variety of games and activities students will work to improve personal fitness levels, movement competence, knowledge, positive attitudes and behaviors that will help students deal with the variety of personal, social and workplace demands in their lives. Students will investigate the basic components of fitness, human nutrition and will participate in activities designed to develop goal setting, communication and social skills. The primary focus of this course is on helping students develop a commitment and a positive attitude to lifelong healthy active living and the capacity to live satisfying, productive lives.

Fitness and Conditioning 10,11,12  

In this course students will challenge themselves to daily vigorous workouts while investigating and evaluating, the effects of exercise on health and human performance. Students will work to improve their personal fitness levels through a variety of aerobic and conditioning activities. Students will begin to understand the concepts of fitness and personal program design. Students will also participate in recreational games that promote healthy living. Success in this course is dependent upon the student being strongly motivated to improve their personal fitness. Grade 10 students will also complete pass/fail health units. 

Team Sports Specialist Basketball 10, 11, 12

This course is open to all students in grades 10-12 who want to delve deeper into basketball.  We will work on the basic skills of basketball, and will get into team tactics and strategies.  Units in weight training and physical conditioning, specific to basketball, will be incorporated throughout the semester.  If you want to improve your basketball, this course is for you!

Team Sports Specialist Volleyball 10, 11, 12

This course is open to all students in grades 10-12 who want to delve deeper into volleyball.  We will work on the basic skills of volleyball, and will get into team tactics and strategies.  Units in weight training and physical conditioning, specific to volleyball, will be incorporated throughout the semester.  If you want to improve your volleyball skills, this course is for you!

Team Sports Specialist Soccer 10, 11, 12

In this course students will focus on soccer. Students will aim to improve their soccer skills, their tactical understanding of the game, and their ability to create personal goals and self-assess their progress. More specifically, the class will introduce athlete development concepts in the areas of: skills, team systems and strategies, fitness, injury management, nutrition and personal planning. Students will spend time on the field, in the gym and in the classroom improving their skills and learning more about the beautiful game!
